Tips from speakers at the Mid-America Plastics Partners' March 30 work-force forum:
Allow casual dress when appropriate. Southwest Airines said it helps employees be more creative and helps flight attendants and ticket agents to approach customers as peers.
Spread out orientation programs over 90 days. Wal-Mart said 75 percent of its turnover happens in the first 90 days.
Help employees balance work and life. Wal-Mart allows people to work three 12-hour shifts instead of five 8-hour shifts.
Be flexible in compensation. Wal-Mart is experimenting with giving workers higher hourly wages if they forego benefits.
