AKRON, OHIO (July 26, 1999) — The NPE Executive Committee has selected Plastics News to be the exclusive publisher of an on-site, daily newspaper at NPE 2000 trade show in Chicago.
The agreement means that only PN will be allowed to distribute a show-daily publication throughout McCormick Place exhibition halls and NPE hotels to attendees and exhibitors of the triennial event.
Both the weekly Crain Communications Inc. newspaper and the monthly Modern Plastics magazine have produced daily publications on site at McCormick Place during NPE. Both publications submitted bids to win exclusive show-daily rights at the next event, scheduled for June 19-23.
The Executive Committee, comprising industry members representing NPE's expected 2,000 exhibitors, voted in late June to grant PN exclusivity, according to Vincent Witherup, the committee's chairman and vice president of international sales for Conair Group.
Witherup said the weekly frequency of the Akron-based newspaper offers significantly greater exposure opportunities for NPE, which is organized by the Washington-based Society of the Plastics Industry Inc.
"Whether you love or hate Plastics News, everybody picks it up and reads it first thing because of its timeliness," said Witherup. "I think Modern Plastics does a very respectable job worldwide," he noted, "but the timeliness and strong readership of Plastics News' independent coverage is what NPE needed most."
PN generates the majority of the content for its show-daily issues on site from a newsroom in McCormick Place and in five days at NPE 1997 delivered two regular issues plus three dailies — containing a total of some 300 pages — to show attendees numbering more than 82,600.
