AKRON, OHIO — Shell Chemical Co.'s brand of polyethylene naphthalate resins has received Food and Drug Administration clearance for use in food packaging. The company used FDA's new Food Contact Notification system.
Under the new system, approval for new food packaging petitions comes quicker than under the previous system. Also, Shell's clearance under the new system is specific to Shell's resins and for use by its customers, said Virginia Davis, Shell's global marketing manager for beer applications.
Shell's FDA clearance includes all of the company's HiPertuf PEN resins, which have potential for beer, food, carbonated soft drinks, hot-fill juices, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals packaging applications. The resins also may be used in PEN/PET blends, Davis said in a telephone interview from her Akron office.
