LONGVIEW, TEXAS—Rex International Inc. continues running its plastic bag production plant in Longview after fire destroyed a warehouse next door. Rex Chairman Charles Warr said the Rex warehouse is 30 feet away from the production plant, but the flames did not spread to the bag-making facility. The blaze started about 12:30 a.m. on April 29. No injuries were reported.
Warr said in a telephone interview that officials are investigating the cause of the blaze. He could not confirm a damage estimate of $3 million reported by Associated Press. The AP report said the three-alarm fire started among 700 pallets of bags used to ship fertilizer and other chemicals.
Warr said Rex is not having any problems supplying customers, because the inventory was for future shipments.
Rex is based in Thomasville, N.C., and had film sales of $55 million in 1998. It runs two other plants in addition to the Longview operation.
