Plaskolite Inc. has entered acrylics production in the West by acquiring Continental Acrylics Inc. of Compton, Calif. Continental makes polymethyl methacrylate pellets and extruded acrylic. Its annual sales are about $25 million — Plaskolite's were about five times that before the purchase, Mitch Grindley, Plaskolite vice president of sales and marketing, said in a telephone interview.
The deal is Plaskolite's latest expansion move. The company is constructing a new sheet plant in Zanesville, Ohio, due to open in August.
Earlier this year, it acquired Ineos Acylics Inc.'s polystyrene lighting-panel product line.
Plaskolite's main business is extruding acrylic sheet, but the company recently diversified into heavy-gauge PET sheet extrusion at its Columbus, Ohio, headquarters plant.
The Continental acquisition will boost Plaskolite's sales in hardware and home-center outlets. Plaskolite bought the firm for an undisclosed price from distributor Laird Plastics of St. Louis.
