HIGHLAND PARK, ILL. — Solo Cup Co., North America's second-largest thermoformer, has won a contract to make plastic cups for South African Breweries plc. Illinois Gov. George Ryan said in a news release that the deal was arranged during his trade mission to South Africa.
Officials for Solo, based in Highland Park, declined an interview.
South African Breweries, based in Johannesburg, is the fourth-largest brewer in the world.
The Solo Cup deal, which an Associated Press story valued at $1 million, comes almost a year after the company unveiled a $109 million project to build a new facility at the USX South Works property in Chicago by 2001.
Plastics News estimates Solo's annual sales at $325 million.
