CHICAGO (July 27, 5:30 p.m. EDT) — The combination of Eurotherm Controls and Barber-Colman Co. product lines has overcome initial market-acceptance concerns.
In early 1999, newly formed Invensys plc of London combined the marketing and sales of Eurotherm industrial and process automation controls and Barber-Colman industrial instruments but maintained their separate manufacturing capabilities.
"We have taken the best-of-class products from the two organizations," said John Searle, vice president of Eurotherm/Barber-Colman sales in Leesburg, Va. "The focus going forward is one company (and) two brands with a focused and consolidated marketing and sales effort" in the field-measurement-and-control niche, he said in an interview at the combined lines´ booth at NPE, held June 19-23 in Chicago.
"When we put the two organizations together, there were concerns about what might happen," he said. "We haven´t noticed any real negative effects of the merger."
Products include Eurotherm´s single-loop controller and Barber-Colman´s Maco line. The plastics industry is the single largest market for the products.
"Plastics is the focus market for Eurotherm and Barber-Colman in the United States, much more than anywhere else in the world," Searle said. "It is our strategic market."
Eurotherm manufactures products at facilities in the United Kingdom and France and a solid-state relays plant in Mesa, Ariz.
A Barber-Colman plant in Love´s Park, Ill., makes thermocouples and systems for the plastics industry.
At NPE, the group introduced a new stand-alone melt-pressure control system available with LED or a dot-matrix display and a more-inclusive Maco DS/EM3 total plastic machine control system.
BTR plc and Siebe plc merged in February 1999 to form Invensys. The electronics-engineering giant reported sales of £9 billion ($14.36 billion) for the fiscal year ended March 31.
Invensys´ intelligent automation division sells motors, sensors, meters, controls such as those of Eurotherm/Barber-Colman and software systems including Wonderware Group´s factory automation solutions.
