SCHWAIG, GERMANY (Jan. 19, 12:35 p.m. EST) — Demag Ergotech GmbH is dipping its toe into the e-commerce waters to sell injection molding machines.
The German company started taking e-mail orders Jan. 18 for its Ergotech Viva machines, in clamping forces of 27½-110 tons. Machines for sale online have been dubbed Ergotech [email protected], for easy, simple and economic.
Demag Ergotech has started out by selling the presses online only in Europe, through through Portax.com, a Germany-based plastics Internet marketplace.
In the U.S. market, the company plans to sell Viva presses online when Demag Ergotech USA´s Web site becomes operational, in about one or two months, according to Richard Shaffer, vice president and general manager of the unit in Strongsville, Ohio.
Gerd Liebig, marketing manager for the Schwaig-based press builder, said buyers have very few options on the machines sold through Portax. The off-the-shelf machines are about 10 percent cheaper than list price. In Europe, Demag Ergotech can deliver the presses in four weeks or less, he said.
Liebig said Demag Ergotech has modest plans for Web sales at the beginning, expecting to sell about 30 presses in the first year. The machinery maker also plans to offer spare parts over the Internet.
