Blow molding and preform injection equipment manufacturer Sipa SpA will introduce a new high-speed system for applying PPG Industries Inc.'s latest Bairocade barrier coating for PET bottles.
Vittorio Veneto, Italy-based Sipa claims the system significantly improves coating efficiency and shelf life, and cuts costs and production time. The company expects the technology to give it a boost in the beer-bottle market.
"Our market share for beer is small," representing 0.8 percent of Sipa sales in 2000, said Lucia Comper, manager of research and development. "Now with this proposal, our target is to rise to reach 10 percent of our sales in two years, then to increase to 50 percent in five years."
Comper will reveal the technology Jan. 29-30 at Nova-Pack Americas 2001, a conference on polyester containers for food and beverages in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Pittsburgh-based PPG's coating has been used successfully since 1998 by major U.S. beverage bottle producer Graham Packaging Co. of York, Pa.
Sipa's new electrostatic spray coating system is designed to be used in-line with container stretch blow molding. Comper said the electrostatic application eliminates limitations imposed by bottle size and shape.
Comper claimed competing technologies limit bottle size — including Actis, the latest coating system from Le Havre, France-based Sidel Group, and BestPET, the coating system created by German firms Krones AG of Neutrabling and Leybold Systems GmbH of Hanau.
"In our case there is no limit," she said. The system can handle as many as 36,000 bottles an hour, she said.
Comper said Sipa primarily serves markets in Eastern Europe, China and the United States.
Sipa presently enjoys a healthy share of the juice market, she said, but the company hopes to increase that in five years with the new coating system.
"For juices our market share in 2000 was 15 percent," she said. "We believe it will increase by 10 percent in two years and 30 percent in five years.
"We expect to install the first coating line in the U.S. this year," she said.
