DTM Corp., which makes Sinterstation stereolithography machines, said its new powdered material uses stainless steel to make more robust molds and prototype parts.
LaserForm ST-100 is a 420 stainless steel-based powder, coated with a plastic binder. DTM introduced the material at EuroMold 2000 in Frankfurt, Germany, Nov. 29-Dec. 2.
According to the Austin, Texas-based DTM, LaserForm ST-100 creates molds that also can generate tooling that can produce up to 100,000 plastic parts.
The Sinterstation uses a laser to fuse powdered materials into solid parts. After the stainless steel part is made, the part gets infiltrated with bronze in an oven.
