I was greatly dismayed at the Jan. 22 Viewpoint column (``APC chief selection could unify industry," Page 6) commenting on Ron Yocum´s presidency of the American Plastics Council. From my own experience in working with Ron as a leader of an allied association, I have seen first-hand the inclusive nature of his leadership. Shortly after Ron was hired to lead APC, we met to discuss a Society of Plastics Engineers/APC partnership. From that meeting, the SPE/APC Alliance was born.
To further encourage the effort, Ron traveled throughout the country and met with SPE Sections, emphasizing the importance of individual and organizational commitment in promoting the plastics industry. More than once, Ron has taken the time to travel from his vacation home to address national SPE functions regarding the above-mentioned issues.
As a direct result of Ron´s own commitment, SPE and APC have enjoyed a productive and collaborative relationship. Not only do I respect his leadership, I am extremely proud to call him my friend. I believe if Plastics News talked to leaders within the industry they may well have a different story to tell. Along with SPE officers, staff, and members, I wish Ron health and happiness in his well-deserved retirement.
