ATLANTA — Owens Corning's MiraVista Slate received Home Magazine's 2001 Building Products Award at the International Builders' Show in Atlanta.
Toledo, Ohio-based OC announced enhancements to the line during the show, held Feb. 9-12, including new sizes and colors, and a new Web site. The product also is now available nationally.
According to spokesman Bill Hamilton, the roofing is processed through compression molding using bulk molding compound. Ground natural slate, natural shale or clay is used as the primary material, said Bob Marks, general manager of the Speciality Roofing Business for OC.
"We use a resin to make it moldable," Marks said.
The combination of materials makes the shingles lightweight and moisture-resistant, the company said. The line is manufactured at the firm's facility in Adelanto, Calif., Hamilton said.
