SAO PAULO, BRAZIL — The next Brasilplast, in 2003, may be the largest ever.
Brasilplast's organizer Alcantara Machado Feiras de Negocios is leading a group of investors who plan to create an additional exhibition area of about 160,000 square feet at the Anhembi exhibition pavilion in Sao Paulo, where Brasilplast takes place.
"The engineering project is being discussed, but we still can't guarantee that the expansion will be ready for Brasilplast '03," said Evaristo Nascimento, Brasilplast's director.
Brasilplast, held March 5-10, had 1,057 exhibitors from 31 countries. Roughly 70 percent of the exhibitors were machinery manufacturers, 22 percent were raw material suppliers, and 8 percent were processors.
The exhibition area totaled 380,000 square feet, and the number of visitors reached 57,000 people.
The recent show took advantage of the favorable scenario in Brazil's economy and allowed machinery exhibitors to exceed the sales volume they had forecast before the fair.
"We normally sell the equivalent of four regular months during the six days of the show, but this year the event generated five months in business," said Maristela Miranda, president of the Brazilian Machinery for Plastics Chamber, a division of the Brazilian Machinery Manufacturers Association (Abimaq).
Maicopresse SpA, which had never sold equipment in Brazil prior to this year, sold 10 injection presses at the show, according to company manager Paulo Spina.
