Plastic Molding Technology Inc. of Seymour, Conn., is establishing a leased, 12,000-square-foot molding facility in El Paso, Texas. Operations begin in June.
The firm has wanted a Southwest plant for years and began a serious effort to enter the region in March 2000. PMT has several automotive and electronics customers in the Southwest and Mexico.
The company is investing about $1 million for equipment and tenant improvements, Managing Director Chuck Sholtis said in a telephone interview. PMT Southwest plans to install 12 hydraulic injection molding machines — both conventional horizontal and vertical insert — with clamping forces of 28-110 tons. The firm also will add tool-repair services.
PMT plans to form manufacturing cells for automated high-precision insert molding in the production of subassemblies. PMT in Seymour operates in a niche requiring tolerances within 0.001 inch.
Within three years, PMT Southwest intends to employ more than 35 in molding technician, setup, mold-making and quality positions.
The expansion does not change the Seymour site, where PMT employs 70, operates 35 presses and occupies 26,000 square feet.
In Slovakia, PMT employs 12 at a Bratislava design engineering office and, with partner Esox sro, operates a low-cost toolmaking venture employing 20 in Liptovskà Hradok. Customer interest has prompted the venture to plan an expansion later this year.
The University of Connecticut School of Business recognized PMT as a family business of the year for 2000.
