BENTON HARBOR, MICH. — Modern Plastics Corp. is preparing for two potential breakthroughs for plastic parts in disc brake systems in North American automobiles.
The Benton Harbor-based company has patented new techniques to create a composite cap on compression molded phenolic pistons, replacing a metal component, said sales engineer Harry Steffen. In addition, the company also is testing an injection molded piston now made in Europe and under consideration for use in North America.
"If there is a market for it, we want to be there when it begins," he said.
Modern Plastics is a Tier 2 molder with nearly $30 million in annual sales and about 300 employees, with compression molding, injection molding and blow molding operations.
