SAN DIEGO - Arrk Product Development Group has cut staff at its Portland, Ore., plant and transformed the machining function at its San Diego facility into a rapid manufacturing department employing 20. The company aims to expedite prototype deliveries.
In San Diego, Arrk installed 10 networked workstations for computer-aided design and manufacturing, expanded toolroom capabilities and upgraded fabrication operations. Arrk named Dalton Rose department manager; he had been production manager in Arrk's Portland facility.
Arrk moved the Portland plant's paint, model-making and machining resources to San Diego and relocated Rose and others. Some jobs were eliminated. The Portland site continues to employ 10, including five in sales.
Parent company Arrk Corp. of Osaka, Japan, a major prototyper and toolmaker, employs more than 2,000 on four continents.
Recently, Arrk Corp. acquired Showa Seiki Kogyo Co. Ltd. of Amagasaki, Japan, and Egawa Seikou Co. Ltd. of Hashima, Japan. Terms were not disclosed.
Showa Seiki employs 75 and has supplied tooling and injection molding for automotive, consumer electronic and information technology industries as a division of Yanmar Diesel Engine Co. Ltd. Showa tooling subsidiary Tokushima employs more than 170.
Egawa Seikou employs 58 and makes tools for injection molding plastic parts.
