Jana Laboratories Inc. is nearly doubling its plastic pipe-testing capacity, acquiring the pipe-testing abilities of
The deal includes a 3,000-square-foot lab in Enfield, Conn. Wayne Bryce, Jana president and chief executive officer, said Jana and the Specialized Technology Resources lab do different types of hydrostatic testing, and both companies' facilities will be maintained.
Specialized Technology Resources has been in plastic pipe testing for 30 years. Jana, a 3-year-old company in Aurora, Ontario, has nine employees and a 10,000-square-foot facility. It specializes in chemical-resistance tests but also does hydrostatic testing and failure analysis.
Bryce said Jana does testing for anything to do with hot and cold potable water, plumbing for water and gas distribution, household items and anything related to plumbing.
``They are two different businesses. They will be integrated, but they will operate as two separate laboratories,'' he said.
Bryce added that Jana is looking to grow with new products and additional acquisitions.
As part of the June 8 deal, STR is gaining a minority equity stake in Jana Labs. Dennis Jilot, president and chief executive officer of STR, will serve on Jana's board.
Jilot said the arrangement will allow the business to grow and give Specialized Technology Resources a chance to share its growth. STR will continue to provide support to the Enfield laboratory, which is near its headquarters.
``The pipe-testing business has been good for us for a long, long time. We think it is a good business, but it is a small part of our business. It is not getting a significant focus to allow it to grow,'' Jilot said.
``I feel like we are giving one of our babies to someone who I feel is extremely talented, and they will be focusing 100 percent on serving our customers and in growing the business,'' he said.
