COVINA, CALIF. - Precision mold builder Caco Pacific Corp. has closed its Lyon, France, facility and is exploring a strategy for doing business in Europe.
``Europe continues to be an increasingly important part of our globalization strategy,'' Manfred Hoffmann, president and chairman, said in a news release. ``We plan to centralize and modernize our European operations.''
The Lyon site employed 45. None moved with the work, Hoffmann said by telephone Aug. 10 from Caco Pacific's Covina headquarters.
Remaining work was consolidated into the Uznach, Switzerland, facility of Otto Hofstetter AG. Caco Pacific and Hofstetter created a partnership in mid-2000 to extend Hofstetter's design and mold technology and production, particularly for PET-bottle tools, into North America. At that time, the partnership was not intended to expand Caco Pacific's European presence.
In a July 31 statement about the closure, the company said it plans to establish a service and customer support center in Europe. ``Several potential opportunities are under consideration,'' the statement said.
Fredy Mockli continues as sales manager for Caco Pacific's European sales and customer service office in Basadingen, Switzerland.
Caco Pacific acquired the Lyon mold shop in 1997 from Gillette Co.
