Thales Group buys Avimo of Singapore
Paris-based Thales Group acquired control of injection molder Avimo Group Ltd. of Singapore in February and now is integrating the business into its existing optics business.
Avimo Precision Polymer Optics Inc. of San Dimas, Calif., displayed at the optics show under its current name but will use Thales Polymer Optics in the future.
The polymer optics unit makes molds and operates nine injection molding machines of 35-300 tons. The unit employs 40.
Kodak building up lens production
Eastman Kodak Co.'s optical products division is building tools and ramping up injection molding of aspherical plastic lenses for digital-versatile-disc players.
Kodak is working toward supplying lenses under a foreign customer's proprietary design, said Kenneth Gamet, product marketing representative.
Volume lens production at a Kodak facility in Rochester, N.Y., should begin in late 2001 or next year. Kodak is entering a market niche currently dominated by the optics technology unit of Konica Corp. of Tokyo.
