3D Systems Corp., which makes rapid prototyping machines, has purchased a French company, OptoForm sarl.
OptoForm's technology allows the use of nonliquid photocurable materials, such as ceramics, metals or paste, to make molds and directly manufacturer parts. The French machines also can use so-called composite materials, meaning more than one substance.
“As we integrate the technology, we expect to gain significant process advantages in our solid imaging systems,” said Brian Service, president and chief executive officer of 3D Systems in Valencia, Calif. “In order to facilitate an immediate market impact, 3D Systems currently is in discussions with materials partners who possess intellectual property in nonliquid and composite materials.”
