SARNEN, SWITZERLAND - Automotive supplier Sarnamotive is looking to increase its production of decorated interior trim parts through its purchase of a Swiss company specializing in metal coatings for polymers.
The acquisition was slated for completion Dec. 31, with Sarnamotive - part of Sarna Group of Sarnen - taking over Eldesign AG of Sachsein, for an undisclosed price.
Eldesign, formerly part of Elfo Group of Obwalden, Switzerland, is essentially a prototype house that creates techniques for decorating plastics, said Douglas Zurick, vice president sales and marketing for Sarnamotive Blue Water Inc., Sarnamotive's North American headquarters in Marysville, Mich.
The company hopes Eldesign will help it win a leading position as a supplier of specialized trim with simulated metal etchings and patterns, according to Zurick.
The company now has 30 employees and Sarnamotive will ramp up its holdings for larger-scale production, starting in Europe, he said.
Sarnamotive already has orders in hand from German automakers and anticipates growth.
``We're seeing a trend toward simulated metals in the designs,'' he said.
The patterned decoration typically goes onto doors, instrument panels, bezels and other highly visible interior sites. The company will build a market in Europe before transferring the process to North America, Zurick said.
