Hard-to-recycle PET bottle labels made from printed polyethylene and polypropylene have met their recycling match, thanks to technology from Erema GmbH of Ansfelden, Austria.
Erema said recycling heavily printed film is even more difficult by print color deposits on the extruder screw in the area of the melting zone. Also, lumps of color can clog the melt filters. That means recyclers have had to clean the screw and change screens frequently, and suffer lower output.
Erema tested extruder screw systems that it found work better on heavily printed film. Following a differentiated trend analysis of screw geometries, the company developed its system.
Erema North America Inc. is in Ipswich, Mass.
