GSW Inc. is growing in vinyl building products with the acquisition of Bemis Manufacturing Co.'s vinyl gutter business.
GSW of Oakville, Ontario, claims to be North America's biggest producer of vinyl gutters. It extrudes the gutters at its Barrie, Ontario, plant, said Dennis Nykoliation, president of GSW Building Products, a unit of GSW Thermoplastics Co. of Barrie.
Nykoliation said GSW bought Bemis patents, trademarks and tooling for Rain Master vinyl gutter products for undisclosed terms. Bemis Manufacturing, a Sheboygan Falls, Wis., company, will make the gutters for GSW under contract in Sheboygan Falls while GSW considers how it will handle production of Rain Master in the long term, he said in a telephone interview. Bemis sold the business to concentrate on contract molding and injection molded toilet seats.
GSW Thermoplastics has annual sales of about US$30 million, estimated Nykoliation. Gutters are its main product, followed by blow molded fencing products and vinyl rails. An undisclosed custom blow molder makes its fencing, but GSW extrudes the rails in Barrie.
Nykoliation said GSW has been making vinyl gutters since the late 1970s, when it bought European technology to enter the field. He would not disclose the size of the Bemis gutter business, but he said it is the third-largest in sales in North America, after GSW and the gutter business of Genova Products Inc. of Davison, Mich. GSW's other main business is a range of water heaters.
Publicly held GSW posted a loss of C$707,000 (US$445,000) for the quarter ended March 31. Sales dipped 2 percent to C$53.1 million (US$33.5 million).
