An internal flat-die design from Extrusion Dies Inc., originally developed to stop melt from leaking at the deckled portions of the die gap in extrusion coating, now is available for cast film.
Deckles are movable barriers at both ends of the die that allow operators to change product width. EDI's new system combines an internal deckle, which blocks flow using blades between the die lips, and an external deckle, which seals off the die gap from the outside.
“Because the external deckle is linked to the drive of the internal deckle, the units function as one system,” said Sam Iuliano, manager of technical sales.
EDI of Chippewa Falls, Wis., claims external deckles give a more effective seal than internal deckles. But the internal deckle gives a more streamlined diversion of melt flow — especially important for cast film, the company said.
