MARTINSVILLE, VA. (Sept. 3, 11:30 a.m. EDT) — CPFilms Inc. is completing installation of a sputtering machine to make solar-control films and similar products.
CPFilms claims to be the world's biggest producer of window films that control transmission of solar energy for automotive, architectural and related applications. The company, a business unit of Solutia Inc., expects to have the new machine running at its Martinsville headquarters operation this month.
The new sputterer can coat films with metals, alloys and oxides with high precision and will be aimed at demanding uses such as electronic displays, the firm said. It will be able to do metallic coating and reactive deposition in multiple layers on films 0.5-10 mils thick and 72 inches wide. CPFilms did not disclose the supplier or cost of the machinery. The firm has other manufacturing plants in Canoga Park, Calif., and Runcorn, England.
