Happiness found in plastics industry
Thanks for a well-documented article on my career and donation to Kean University (``Plastics vet Hynes donates to university,'' Sept. 16, Page 15).
I especially appreciated the acknowledgement of Harold Holz. Without him, I would never have seeded my roots in Minnesota.
The plastics industry has allowed me to create what most of us aspire: Do what you love and love what you're doing.
AMBA members show support of free trade
I read with great interest your Perspective in the Sept. 23 edition (``Plastimagen holds up to obstacles,'' Page 6).
Your comment regarding the absence of the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. at Plastimagen is duly noted, but I was disappointed that you did not mention the presence of at least one significant U.S. trade group, the American Mold Builders Association.
AMBA has long been committed to increasing international trade and our members view Mexico as an important and desirable trading partner.
We have represented our 400-plus members in at least one international trade show per year in the past five years, including the recent Plastimagen show in Mexico City. Our members are working hard to increase the amount of business they do in Mexico and other Latin American countries.
I have been concerned for some time that the editorial content of many plastic industry trade publications seems to portray U.S. mold makers as protectionist, close-minded isolationists more concerned with erecting trade barriers than dealing with the realities of a global economy. On the contrary, the stated position of AMBA and of the majority of the mold makers I know is that free trade is good for everyone and that trade barriers often do more harm than good.
AMBA continues to lobby Congress to enact measures such as investment tax credits and other incentives that encourage companies to purchase from U.S. manufacturers.
We feel it is more effective to make it less expensive to buy in the United States than it is to penalize companies that buy offshore.
Our focus is on initiatives that ultimately benefit both our customers in the United States and our international customers. It would be nice to see our efforts and our true positions better represented in the press.
