Distinctive Plastics buys 66-ton machine
VISTA, CALIF. - To accommodate business growth, Distinctive Plastics Inc. has acquired a new injection molding machine with 66 tons of clamping force.
DPI invested more than $200,000 to buy the Arburg injection press - its second vertical-clamp model - and create a clean room.
In addition to vertical applications, DPI focuses on multiple-shot molding and in-mold assembly and decoration. The firm has a custom-built, 44,000-square-foot facility in Vista.
The custom injection molder employs 60 and operates 19 presses of 28-500 tons, including a multishot machine. The company is certified under ISO 9001. DPI also has bolstered its in-house toolmaking capabilities.
``We are beginning to see the early stages of momentum building'' in DPI's target market of technical niche molding, said Kip Carter, business development manager.

Gundle hires adviser, closes Calgary plant
HOUSTON - Geomembrane producer Gundle/SLT Environmental Inc. has hired an investment adviser and has closed a plant.
The Houston firm hired Harris Williams & Co. to explore ways to raise shareholder value, Samir Badawi, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Gundle/SLT, said in a recent telephone conference with analysts.
Gundle/SLT shut its Calgary, Alberta, geomembrane liner plant this month and moved the extrusion line to Houston. Officials estimate the closure will boost profit by $500,000 in 2003. Gundle/SLT will gain another $1.2 million after selling the plant, Badawi said.
The firm gained capacity a year ago when it bought rival Serrot International.
Gundle/SLT reported a net loss of $1.5 million for the fourth quarter, vs. profit of $550,000 in the year-earlier period. Sales were $52.4 million, up 15 percent. For the full year, the firm had profit of $13.7 million before extraordinary items on sales of $267 million. North America sales were flat.
