SciTech Plastics Group LLC has purchased three all-electric Niigata injection presses for its medical molding plant in Marlborough.
All-electric machines cost more than presses powered by hydraulic power.
But because they consume less electricity, Massachusetts Electric Co. gave SciTech a rebate of 70 percent of the difference in price for buying the Niigata presses. Anne Yost, SciTech purchasing director, said the all-electric presses ended up costing nearly the same as standard hydraulic machines.
SciTech, based in Kansas City, Mo., purchased Accutech Plastics Inc. in Marlborough in 2002. The plant now is called SciTech New England Molding Center-Marlborough.
The new Niigata presses were two horizontal machines with 310 tons of clamping force and an 85-ton vertical machine.
