With NPE 2003 less than two months away, executives at Bayer Corp. (Booth N5149) took a few moments to remind both their customers and competitors that they delivered on the promise of a deal they announced three years ago at NPE 2000.
At that event, Pittsburgh-based Bayer revealed details of a partnership with Innova Engineering GmbH to promote Contura technology, a patented cooling system Bayer said can reduce cooling time by an average of 30 percent while improving molded part quality.
Bayer followed up on the deal with Menden, Germany-based Innova at its pre-NPE news conference March 12 in Pittsburgh. Mark Witman, director of Bayer's injection molding technical center in Pittsburgh, cited several successful examples of the Bayer/Innova partnership, including:
* Reducing insert cycle times from 37 seconds to 25 seconds on a nylon pulley bracket, resulting in a savings of $25,000 annually. The investment was paid back in 10 months.
* Providing $36,000 in annual savings in a sprue bushing by reducing cycle times from 16.8 seconds to 14.3 seconds. The project paid for itself in a week.
* Reducing insert cycle times from 64 seconds to 54 seconds in an ABS appliance part, resulting in annual savings of $85,000. The project paid for itself in less than nine months and eliminated part warpage.
* Providing $59,000 in annual savings in a thin-wall polycarbonate cassette for the medical industry by reducing cycle times from 28 seconds to 15 seconds. The investment was paid back in six months.
Contura is a three-dimensional, conformal mold-cooling system that separates the mold core into slices, inserts water channels and bonds them together using patented vacuum brazing technology. The system aims to speed up the cooling process by eliminating heat peaks and leveling the mold temperature to allow for more uniform cooling.
Contura also has been able to reduce warp in finished parts, reduce scrap and avoid tool corrections. Bayer became involved with the project when it realized the significant improvements the technology could provide to customers.
