Additives suppliers fine-tune their offerings to extend plastics performance and lift production rates. More choices in colorants and purging compounds are a few notable trends. The following companies are among those exhibiting chemicals and additives at NPE.
Asaclean-Sun Plastech Inc. (Booth S2549): New purging compound for polypropylene resins. Asaclean UP grade gives enhanced performance in injection molding and extrusion equipment, with operating temperatures of 340°-570° F.
Axel Plastics Research Labs (Booth E13216): Several new additives, including process aid for silicone rubber and related elastomers, flow improver based on vegetable products rather than metallic stearates, material that improves scratch and scuff resistance of polypropylene, and internal mold release for phenolic molding compounds.
Cabot Corp. (Booth N4371): New carbon blacks including Vulcan XC605, a premium conductive grade that is dispersed easily and promotes surface smoothness, stiffness and impact strength; and Vulcan XC305, a cost-effective type for less-demanding applications. Also, Elftex P100 for pressure pipe uses, providing better balance of properties such as particle size, ultraviolet-light stability, dispersion, moisture absorption and chemical impurities. Three new Black Pearls pigments for film: 3030 for surface protection film; 4040, with opacity and weatherability suited to agricultural film; and 4060, with even higher opacity and weatherability. And, Nanogel hydrophobic silica aerogel, used as a carrier, thickener and in rheology control.
Crompton Corp. (Booth N5726): New antioxidant, Naugard 900, a blend for long-term heat aging and process stability - Crompton claims it has low emissions and does not bloom. New Mark vinyl additives, including Mark 2910, a self-lubricating heat stabilizer for PVC pipe production that eliminates the need for a wax lubricant. The pumpable liquid imparts better gloss and less plate-out. And, Mark 2289, a heat stabilizer for window profiles and other uses with intense solar exposure, giving extra UV-light and heat protection and preventing yellowing and chalking. Also, Hydrobrite white mineral oil for rigid PVC extrusion, a free-flowing liquid paraffin that is a cost-effective alternative to paraffin wax. It is UV light- and color-stable.
Dicronite Dry Lube (Booth N5922): Dry film lubricant process for low-friction coating mold release. Firm has opened new processing facilities.
Dyna-Purge division of Shuman Plastics (Booth S2013): Dyna Purge K, new purging agent specially formulated for soft-touch polymers such as thermoplastic elastomers, thermoplastic polyolefins and thermoplastic rubber. New Dyna-Purge B, suited to purging in injection molding, extrusion and stretch blow molding.
Lutianhua Group Inc. (Booth E13037): Anti-static agents, lubricants, plasticizers, heat stabilizers, degradation promoters and other additives.
Milliken Chemical (Booth S3214): New hyper-nucleating agent for polypropylene, Hyperform HPN-68 helps PP solidify faster in injection molding and extrusion, allowing faster production speeds, and helps reduce warpage. New ClearTint transparent colorants for PP are well-suited for use with Millad 3988 clarifying agent; the colorants are nonmigrating, easily dispersed, nonabrasive and purge easily. ClearShield UV-light absorber for PET packaging and containers provides broad UV-light protection while maintaining PET's transparency and colorless properties, and can be compounded into PET resin or added during preform injection molding. AlphaSan antimicrobial, based on silver, is stable at high temperatures and provides low color formation; approved by many regulatory bodies for food contact, drinking water, and heating, ventilating and air conditioning components.
P.J. Murphy Forest Products Corp. (Booth N4420): Wood flour for use in plastic composites.
