Designers and plastics experts will gather June 26 at the NPE show for a one-day educational and networking seminar on global design trends and business challenges. The event will explore what's new in industrial design, materials and processes, and also feature a panel discussion on designer-vendor relations and a session on the challenges of doing business internationally.
The conference - organized by the Dulles, Va.-based Industrial Designers Society of America and co-presented by Plastics News - will be held in McCormick Place Room N128. Herbst LaZar Bell Vice President Mark Dziersk will spearhead a design trends panel featuring industrial design experts including Betsy Goodrich of Manta Product Development and Charles Austen Angell, IDSA's executive vice president. The session will assess the influence and impact designers have on the development and volume usage of polymers in product development. The panel also will discuss the environmental and social implications of polymer selection as well as aesthetic and functional requirements.
Later that morning, Warren Ginn, a designer with Integrated Design Systems who chairs IDSA's Materials & Processes Section, will moderate a panel exploring how materials suppliers, designers and processors can cooperate more effectively. That session will include: Mark Schuchardt of DuPont Engineering Polymers, Rick Noller of Eastman Specialty Plastics, Randy Stone of DuPont Dow Elastomers, Stefan Rasch of Mack Molding Co., and plastics engineering veteran Glenn Beall.
Zach Kaplan and Keith Schacht, co-founders of Chicago-based Inventables LLC, will conduct a show-and-tell of plastics that look like metal and other novel polymeric materials and technologies. David Kusuma, senior director of worldwide engineering for Tupperware Inc., will direct a panel discussion about the challenges of manufacturing and designing internationally. Panelists will include John Van Akkeren of Radius Product Development, Ron Guillard of Texas design consultancy Ignition Inc., and Alan Hart of Generics Group AG.
Registration costs $345 for IDSA members and $445 for nonmembers, which includes discounted admission to NPE. To register or for more information, visit www.idsa.org/whatsnew/npe.htm or contact IDSA by e-mail at [email protected] or tel. (703) 707-6000.
