Arthur E. La Fleur, co-founder of Custom Packaging Systems Inc., died April 26 in Manistee. He was 90 and had suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
Known as Doc from his more than 50 years as a chiropractor, La Fleur introduced the plastic garbage bag to the United States in 1964, and he held several bag-related patents, according to his sons.
Together with his sons, Lee and Arnie, the elder La Fleur started bag maker Custom Packaging Systems Inc. in Manistee in 1982. Their company also manufactured Rhino bulk bags.
La Fleur retired in 1996 from the company, which was purchased by Scholle Corp. in 2000. The business, now known as Scholle Custom Packaging Inc., still is headquartered in Manistee. Lee remains head of research and development and general manager.
