As sheet extrusion lines get bigger, Processing Technologies Inc. (Booth N7518) claims its new Video-Gap system provides safer monitoring of the chrome roll nip in sheet extrusion.
The system, based on digital camera technology, allows an operator to observe remotely the sheet die lip and chrome roll-nip point regions. PTI claims Video-Gap is safer and more practical than traditional line-of-sight viewing by an operator.
In high-capacity sheet extrusion systems, the center lines of take-off systems are getting taller. That means an operator often needs a ladder to view the nip area.
PTI is displaying Video-Gap at NPE 2003. It features a digital camera mounted on each side of the primary chrome nip area. Each camera includes a high-intensity light for proper illumination. Observing the nip area helps an operator determine the uniformity of the bank of polymer and how the polymer curtain is exiting the sheet die.
PTI also is showing its Auto-Ramp Module process control tool. The module can coordinate ramp-up operations in a complex extrusion system.
For example, a seven-layer coextrusion line may have as many as 14 different drive motors. Auto-Ramp will coordinate each of the drives to provide balanced, harmonized and fast ramp-up. Even simple monolayer sheet systems can benefit from Auto-Ramp, according to PTI. The module will take control of the line to ramp-up the three drives from thread-up speed to full production speed without the operator having to control the individual drives manually.
