ColorMatrix Corp. (Booth N6149) has agreed to provide global marketing support for barrier additive Amosorb, produced by BP Amoco Chemical Co., the two firms announced June 23 at NPE.
Amosorb is a cost-effective method of providing an oxygen barrier in PET packaging, said Michelle Morie-Bebel, Amosorb commercial manager for BP Amoco. At typical usage levels of 2-5 percent, the barrier extends the shelf life of juices and similar products in monolayer PET containers to about six months, Morie-Bebel.
``The Amosorb business has been growing and BP Amoco's resources are not big enough to handle the growth,'' said Morie-Bebel. ``ColorMatrix has the global marketing support.''
ColorMatrix, based in Cleveland, has an exclusive license to handle existing applications, mainly concentrated in PET containers, said ColorMatrix Chief Executive Officer John Haugh. BP is developing a broader range of applications, including film, with the help of ColorMatrix.
Amosorb is based on patented, unsaturated organic chemistry and does not interfere with taste, Morie-Bebel said. Although early versions added cloudiness to containers, newer versions provide much better clarity, according to the company. Amosorb meets food-contact requirements in the United States and Canada.
Amosorb has been used in commercial applications since 2001. PET containers for juice and condiments are among current major markets. Morie-Bebel said Amosorb's chemistry probably precludes its use in polyolefin packaging.
Graham Packaging Co. LP of York, Pa., is one major blow molder using Amosorb. It recently began supplying single-serve PET barrier bottles for oxygen-sensitive liquids such as fruit juices. The Monosorb bottles are monolayer constructions using Amosorb DFC added in a concentrate immediately before molding. The barrier level can be customized by adjusting Amosorb levels, said George Peterson, a business director in Graham's food and beverage business unit.
``We see an important continuing role for other barrier technologies, such as coatings and multilayers, but this new Monosorb technology provides the kind of simple, cost-effective approach that many mainstream beverage makers have been seeking,'' Peterson said in a pre-NPE announcement.
ColorMatrix already manufactures a line of color concentrates in plants around the world. It has specialized in liquid colorants.
