Any doubts the plastics industry may have had about Ampacet Corp.'s global intentions now can be erased.
The Tarrytown, N.Y.-based color concentrate maker waited until NPE 2003 to announce five major global initiatives - acquisitions of businesses in Italy, England and Brazil; and expansions of existing sites in Canada and Thailand.
Ampacet (Booth S2903) is acquiring Polimaster srl in Busto Garolfo, Italy; PolyColour Ltd. in Telford, England; and Corland of Camicari in Bahia, Brazil. Terms of those deals were not disclosed.
The expansions include 60,000 square feet for manufacturing and lab upgrades in Delta, British Columbia; and 30,000 square feet for concentrate production and warehousing in Rayong, Thailand.
Ampacet already generated about 40 percent of its annual sales - which were right around $500 million last year - from outside of North America.
If the newly announced deals are any indicator, that number may be increasing.
The deals ``are designed to enhance our global strategic commitment to custom color masterbatch innovation, services and solutions for the rigid and flexible packaging markets,'' Ampacet President and Chief Executive Officer Robert DeFalco said in a news release.
Frank Iannotti, Ampacet's senior director of business development, described the deals as ``showing long-term commitment to a specific strategy that we have in place.''
All three acquired firms are custom color businesses that serve injection and blow molders, Iannotti said in a June 22 interview at Ampacet's booth.
Ampacet's strengths traditionally have been in black and white concentrates used in film and other packaging applications.
The Canada and Thailand expansions are set to open in early 2004. The Canada project will ensure product quality in engineered resins for custom color molded work.
The Thailand addition includes new twin-screw extruders for custom color work.
Iannotti said both moves resulted from ``organic growth'' in custom color work for blow and injection molding.
``We're moving in a broad way from flexible to rigid applications,'' he added.
Ampacet also chose NPE to announce:
* The installation of new manufacturing and lab equipment in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The project will give that site the ability to make custom color concentrates. The equipment also will allow for faster product development to Brazil and surrounding regions, officials said.
* The debut of commercial offices in Shanghai, China, and Mumbai, India. The firm is looking to establish warehousing in Shanghai as well.
* The opening of a new and larger commercial office in Mexico City. The firm also operates a warehouse there.
