Eleven-year-old Mike Steele of Plainfield, Ill., will get the chance to meet NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon thanks to the generosity of nine plastic companies.
They combined to donate $52,500 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois Tuesday as more than 200 people participated in ``A Night Under the Stars'' held at the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum.
At the same time, Steele, who suffers from aplastic anemia, a bone marrow disorder, learned through a pre-recorded message from Gordon that he will meet him at a Winston Cup Race in Bristol, Tenn., in August. Steele and his family will spend a weekend camped in a mobile home and then watch the race.
The fundraising effort was sponsored by DuPont Engineering Polymers of Wilmington, Del.; Ashland Distribution Co. of Columbus, Ohio; PolyOne Corp. of Avon Lake, Ohio; and Titan Plastics Group of Portage, Mich. Other contributors include BIC Consumer Products USA of Milford, Conn.; Mayco Plastics Inc. of Sterling Heights, Mich.; National Molding Corp. of Farmingdale, N.Y.; Stihl Inc. of Virginia Beach, Va., and UFE Mold Manufacturing of Stillwater, Minn.
