CHICAGO (July 16, 12:35 p.m. EDT) — Kiefel Inc. introduced its Kirion blown film system to North America at NPE.
Kiefel ran a three-layer Kirion film line at its booth before shipping the line to Imaflex Inc. of Montreal. Kiefel President Steven Engel, based in Wrentham, Mass., highlighted features of the line at the Chicago show, held June 23-27.
The Kirion system is based on modules to make it easier to change configurations for specific applications. It allows production of film with as many as seven layers. The gravimetric feeding system is suited for six materials per extruder as well as the main polymer.
The line includes a thermally controlled die with 96 thermal actuators and a third-generation control algorithm for fast, automatic profile control.
The collapsing frame angle and the side guides have motorized adjustment operated from the control console or take-off assembly. The collapsing frame assembly and the side guides are equipped with nylon brushes that do not absorb heat, helping to maintain constant thermal conditions around the bubble. The brushes' flexibility also allows production of scratch-sensitive and sticky films without marking the film. The Zerotouch patented air-turning bar system is finely milled to provide a cushion of air, allowing production of extremely sticky and optically demanding films, Engel said.
The NPE system featured a Kiron W-M surfac/center/gap winder supplied by Wintech Winding Technology AG, the Lachen, Switzerland, subsidiary Kiefel acquired a few years ago. Designed as a dual winder, its contact roller has a vacuum system and minimizes film winding tension. The patented CLP2 constant lay-on pressure system ensures constant pressure, even at low contact pressures. Winding characteristics are easily controlled based on web tension and contact pressure.
In addition to a central control panel, each subsystem has its own control panel to allow the operator to access relevant parameters at all times.
