Closure molder Portola Packaging Inc. is cutting costs by closing three plants.
The firm said in a recent financial statement that it will shut plants in San Jose and Chino, Calif., and one in Sumter, S.C. The firm, based in San Jose, will relocate the California production operations into a new plant in Tolleson, Ariz., by late February. Production at Sumter will move to Portola's Kingsport, Tenn., plant.
Portola now runs six plants in the United States, five in Canada and Mexico and three offshore.
Besides closures, Portola makes bottles and filling and capping equipment. The firm reported a loss of $400,000 on sales of $53.7 million for its third quarter, ended May 31. More than half of Portola's sales are in the United States.
