Wexco Corp. has purchased a large piece of wire electric discharge machining equipment, as the bimetallic barrel maker strengthens its position in barrels for twin-screw extruders.
``This allows us to do some fairly large twins,'' said Ralph Torning, vice president of sales and marketing.
The wire EDM machine can machine parts that are almost 24 inches high. Wexco already has five ram-type EDM machines.
The Lynchburg company has hired several production employees that are experienced in twin-barrel manufacturing.
Wexco's roots in making barrels for twin-screw extruders started in 1975, when it was founded to supply liners for twin-screw extruders made by a sister company, Welding Engineers Inc. of Blue Bell, Pa.
Officials declined to say how much Wexco has invested in the new EDM machine.
The company also makes barrels for injection molding.
``We now have a higher capability to make twin barrels and liners,'' Torning said.
