Gabe Wing has been working with advanced polymeric materials for the past decade. He joined Herman Miller in 2001 and provides the technical leadership for office-furniture maker's Design for the Environment (DfE) team. He has created an environmental materials database that enables Herman Miller´s engineers to specify the most eco-effective materials for new products.
A significant portion of his effort involves working closely with key industrial partners to optimize current materials and also to identify new, sustainable solutions. In addition, he leads the training sessions that educate designers and engineers on the principles of sustainable product design.
Wing´s professional background includes working as a polymer engineer managing an analytical lab and leading the advanced materials efforts for injection molder Cascade Engineering Inc. of Grand Rapids, Mich. While at Cascade, he also worked with manufacturing engineers to solve production issues. Prior to that, Wing spent three years working as a process engineer for Kirkwood Industries, a thermoset molder and compounder in Owosso, Mich., supporting extrusion activities as well as material development.
He received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan, and a master´s degree from Michigan State University in the same discipline. The focus of his graduate research involved optimizing the adhesion of phenolic resin to glass fibers.
