An engineer by training, Doug Chapple joined the Switzerland-based Sarna Group from Key Plastics LLC in June 2001, as president and CEO of the Sarnamotive North American Group. Sarna had purchased closely held Blue Water Plastics from the Haas family in 2000. Sarnamotive America includes nine facilities, with seven in the Michigan area, one in Mexico, and one in the United Kingdom. Today, Marysville, Mich.-based Sarnamotive America employs about 1,400 and projects 2003 sales of $180 million.
Chapple had served as senior vice president and general manager of the North American operations of automotive molder Key Plastics, and in the mid-1990s was VP of manufacturing for Dott Industries Inc., a privately owned finisher and decorator of plastic products. Before that, Chapple worked more than 20 years for General Motors Corp.´s Inland Fisher Guide. In his last post there, he was divisional director of product engineering, and he previously managed IFG´s 1,100-employee Adrian, Mich., plant, implementing the Toyota Production System to produce door trim and instrument panel assemblies.
Chapple earned a bachelor of mechanical engineering degree from General Motors Institute, an MBA from the University of Western Ontario, and also participated in the University of Michigan´s Program for Management Development.
