Cleveland-based Stewart Kohl is one of two managing general partners of Riverside Co., a private equity firm founded in 1988 to invest in premier companies at the smaller end of the middle market, meaning companies valued between $10 million and $100 million. Since then, the firm has acquired 83 companies and built nearly $1 billion of capital under management.
These investments included the March 1997 purchase of the former Trend Plastics Inc. and Tool-Tech Corp., which Riverside expanded, renamed Trend Technologies Inc. and sold three years later. Today, Riverside´s polymer-related investments include Hudson-Sharp Machine Co., a Green Bay, Wis., maker of plastic-bag-making equipment, and Vitex Packaging Group, an Itasca, Ill., flexible-packaging manufacturer and converter.
Under the guidance of Kohl and co-managing general partner Bela Szigethy, Riverside has grown to employ nearly 60 investment professionals in eight offices in five countries. Prior to joining Riverside, Kohl was a vice president of Citicorp Venture Capital Ltd., the private equity arm of Citibank. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Ohio´s Oberlin College in 1977.
