It was great seeing Jack Cole's Plastic Man gracing the cover of the Jan. 5 issue of Plastics News (“Plastic Man. Is he the shape of things to come?”). And you did an interesting spread inside, including the history, quotes and classic cover reproductions.
The article also brought back pleasant memories from my childhood, as Plastic Man was a must-read.
As you stated, Batman was used to great effect in General Motors' Onstar ad campaigns, and those ads were quite successful. I think Plastic Man would be a great spokesman, logo or iconic symbol for the American Plastics Council, for several reasons.
Cartoon or comic characters aren't just for children, and depending on the presentation and usage they can be not only extremely appealing, but also a very effective advertising tool. Even moreso now, with the interest in all things “retro.”
Even with the character's inherent cockiness and quirkiness, I couldn't think of a better, more positive face to put on the APC, and to symbolize all the flexible possibilities that are part of the plastics industry.
