A seemingly minor change to the screw oil heating element on American Maplan Corp.'s profile extrusion lines reduced the amount of electrical power needed by 20 percent, to 7.6 watts from 9.5 watts.
In addition to reduced energy consumption, the improvement can increase heater life by 50-60 percent, with less machine maintenance, said Kurt Waldhauer, vice president of sales at the McPherson, Kan., company.
Waldhauer said Maplan officials noted brisk spare-parts orders for the heating element, and they figured the frequent orders indicated a relatively high part failure. Maplan and the heating-element supplier agreed that the lower wattage could give just as good a performance.
Available on new extruders and as a retrofit, the new heater is identical in appearance to the old model and it connects to the machine in the same way.
