Chinese firms buy Battenfeld machines
GLOUCESTER, MASS. - Battenfeld Gloucester Engineering Co. Inc. has sold film lines to two companies in China.
Battenfeld Gloucester reports it sold a five-layer cast film line to Fuzhou GT, which makes cast polypropylene film in Fuzhou, China.
The machinery company said the U.S.-made film line rivals the most advanced lines running in North America and Europe.
Fuzhou plans to produce film for metalizing, laminating and retort packaging. The company also will use the line to make candy wrap. The line includes a five-layer feedblock and AutoGauge die from Cloeren Inc.
The company also shipped two blown film lines to China Bosoar Group in Baoding City. One Bosoar division, Hebei Baoshuo Co. Ltd., ordered a five-layer blown film line to make multilayer barrier film for food packaging and protective films.
Baoding Baoyuan Plastic Packing Material Co. Ltd. bought a three-layer line to make films for frozen foods, liquid milk packaging, shrink wrap and silage.
Neither Bosoar division had run Battenfeld Gloucester equipment before.
``The film maker in China is growing rapidly and embracing the high-tech packaging found in the U.S. and Europe,'' said Robert Gui, Battenfeld Gloucester's sales director in China.
The company is based in Gloucester.

Spirex to make, sell patented Barr screw
YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - Screw maker Spirex Corp. has signed an exclusive agreement with Robert Barr Inc. to make and market the Barr energy transfer screw (ET) and the Barr variable barrier energy transfer screw (VBET)
Spirex President Paul T. Colby said the Barr screws give customers more options to maximize production rates at lower temperatures and minimize wear while consuming less energy.
Both designs are patented.
The ET features a low-shear mixing geometry in the metering section. About 70-80 percent of the polymer is melted by the high shear. The remaining material is melted in the ET section. Using the drag force of screw rotation, the remaining pellets are mixed with the hot melt.
Also, since the entire hot melt is continuously exposed to the barrel as a thin film, the screw gives better heat transfer to the barrel, Spirex said.
The VBET increases conductive melting and mixing at higher throughput rates. The low-shear design does not use a barrier section, but uses almost half of its length as energy transfer sections. The VBET has been used to make blown film and sheet, and blow and injection molded products.
In other news, Youngstown-based Spirex was awarded a patent for its Eliminator nozzle tip.
