With its bakery and food business climbing in volume, thermoformer Leading Industry Inc. plans to move to a new location and double its size next year.
The Oxnard, Calif., company will shift operations to a plant in a local industrial park, President Sam Hong said March 26. The facility is to be completed by April 2005, he added.
The company will lease 195,277 square feet of space, and plans to purchase the facility outright within a year after moving there, Hong said. Currently, Leading Industry operates from a 90,000-square-foot building.
In anticipation of the move, the company is purchasing an additional thermoforming and PET extrusion line this year.
The company makes domes, trays and other containers for confectionery items and has launched similar products for fresh-cut produce. Most of its food-related products use PET or polypropylene.
The company extrudes most of the PET used in those products and will have 15 thermoforming lines and two extrusion lines by the end of the year, Hong said. Leading Industry also thermoforms containers, blister packaging and clamshells for other consumer products.
The firm, owned by brothers Sam and Dale Hong, does not divulge annual sales figures. The pair started Leading Industry in 1981 as a contract packaging firm.
The company will open its new location on 10 acres but plans to buy another 7 acres surrounding the site, Sam Hong said.
The investment cost and equipment needs at the new facility still must be determined, Hong added. The firm has about 150 employees and plans to add more once the facility is completed, he said.
