Fanuc still growing as it hits milestone
ROCHESTER HILLS, MICH. - Japanese robot maker Fanuc Ltd. said that, after 30 years of production, the company has built 120,869 Fanuc robots as of the end of January.
``Our current robot unit production is about 1,300 units per month,'' said Y. Inaba, president and chief executive officer. He said Fanuc expects to hit the 150,000 mark in 2006.
Half of those robots have gone to the Americas. The U.S. subsidiary, Fanuc Robotics America Inc. in Rochester Hills, reports it has installed 59,581 industrial robots in North and South America, making it the largest supplier in those markets.
The North American market for industrial robots grew by 16 percent in 2003. Fanuc claims its sales grew at an even faster pace.
In Brazil, Fanuc has expanded by opening a 22,000-square-foot building in Sao Paulo. The move was prompted by steady growth in South America for Fanuc, which has been selling robots there for a dozen years. Most of the floor space in the new facility is dedicated to systems engineering, assembly, integration and demonstrations.
