Engel Austria GmbH is moving its injection units for small-tonnage injection presses from Steyr, Austria, to its plant in St. Valentin, Austria, as the company moves to a just-in-time operation.
Injection unit production includes machining of the cylinders, screws and nonreturn valves. The operation is called Engel Werkstofftechnik, or EWT.
Engel has been producing injection units for large-tonnage injection presses in St. Valentin for the past three years. Moving the small injection units there as well makes St. Valentin the center for that machining at Engel - with a capacity of 3,500 units a year. The first assembly line for small injection units went into production in St. Valentin last fall.
Moving work from Steyr is part of Engel's 29,000-square-foot expansion in St. Valentin, which also makes large-tonnage injection presses.
Engel's headquarters plant, in Schwertberg, assembles small and midsize machines.
St. Valentin will ship injection units to Schwertberg on a just-in-time basis. Engel officials said the company's ultimate goal is a smooth production flow with short supply distances and no intermediate storage of work in progress.
The St. Valentin operation also will supply injection units for Engel plants in Guelph, Ontario, and Pyongtaek, South Korea.
The expansion in St. Valentin also will create more space to assembly Engel's MacPET line of PET preform injection presses. The expansion should be completed by mid-2004.
Engel Austria is part of Engel Holding GmbH, also based in Schwertberg.
