Harvin Reaction Technology Inc., a manufacturer and compounder of polyurethanes and polyol prepolymers, has acquired pigment dispersion manufacturer M-R-S Chemicals Inc.
The move will augment Harvin's offerings mainly to the rebond carpet pad industry, where it already sells prepolymers for manufacturing PU adhesives, said Dick Baum, Harvin vice president of operations and general manager.
``This opens up a new area with my adhesives customers,'' he said. ``I can say, `By the way, I've got a pigment dispersion to go with it.' ''
Rebonded carpet pad manufacturers fuse chopped, recycled PU foam into carpet pads, using coloring in their adhesives to distinguish visually between different weights of pad, Baum said.
Harvin brought all of M-R-S' equipment to Harvin's 32,000-square-foot plant in Greensboro, N.C., from New Haven, Mo.
``It was a drop-in,'' he said. ``I had the space and the utilities available.''
He did not disclose the cost of the acquisition or the move.
M-R-S' plant was absorbed into other operations of St. Louis-based Dash Multi-Corp, the parent company of both M-R-S and Harvin, Baum said.
No M-R-S management moved with the company, and Harvin added no employees to its staff of 15 to manufacture the dispersion product line, he said.
More than 350,000 tons of PU foam is recycled from furniture, automotive and other types of manufacturing and turned into rebond carpet pads each year in the United States, according to a study by the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources.
Other elastomer-related companies Dash Multi-Corp owns are PU and PVC compounder MarChem Inc. and rubber recycler RB Rubber Products Inc.
