MEINERZHAGEN, GERMANY — SMS Plastics Technology of Meinerzhagen reported vinyl extrusion news from two units: upgrades for fence makers from American Maplan Corp. and about an extruder for making windows from Battenfeld Extrusionstechnik GmbH.
Maplan, of McPherson, Kan., introduced a die block that produces square fence posts, a feed block that permits one extruder and coextruder to produce two profiles at the same time, and a special calibration system with a wet-sizing sleeve that minimizes plating and boosts productivity by 50-60 percent.
Typically, fence posts are extruded with a round pin and bushing, then stretched into a square shape in the calibration system, Maplan said. Disadvantages of this approach include thinning out the cap-stock layer when the post is stretched into the corners. Also, a stretched profile tends to revert to its original shape, the company said.
Maplan's new die block extrudes the pipe in a square form right out of the die. The die block has x and y adjustments so processors can tune wall thickness. Eliminating the stretching also speeds through-put, Maplan said.
The dual feed block takes the melt stream, vinyl and cap-stock, from one extruder and a coextruder, splits it and then channels the streams into two dies. The dies then coextrude the two fence profiles simultaneously.
From Battenfeld Extrusions-technik, of Bay Oeynhausen, Germany, has introduced the winBEX, a larger version of its 2-year-old miniBEX for extruding window profiles.
Both machines have a standardized, modular design. Four twin-screw extruders are available for winBEX lines, including a large conical twin-screw machine called BEX 2-72 C that puts out 88-550 pounds an hour. The machine continues the company's expansion into conical twin-screw extruders.
The other three window lines use parallel twin-screw extruders. The BEX 2-68-28 V has an output of 110-440 pounds an hour. The BEX 2-92-28 V runs 330-770 pounds an hour. The largest extruder, the BEX 2-110-28 V pumps out 440-1,100 pounds an hour.
